Episode 050: SOBAM Update, Merch Update & The Importance of Pivoting

Welcome to Episode 50 of the Fit Successful Dad Podcast!

.

It definitely still feels like just yesterday the podcast was just a concept. I was sitting with my sister around Thanksgiving 2016 talking about ideas, concepts, and names. Within a 24 hour window, I dialed in on all of those things and secured my domain name www.fitsuccessfuldad.com – what a rush. That was nearly 7 months ago, and now I have just published my 50th episode over 17 straight weeks with 100% consistency. I’ve also interviewed nearly 20 amazing entrepreneurs, and made dozens of new relationships. Some of which have been involved in helping me get my upcoming brand off the ground, SOBAM Gear Co.

.

Speaking of SOBAM Gear Co – I have made some changes to my strategy with the Kickstarter campaign. Mainly, I have pulled in a different campaign manager and content creator. This new relationship makes a lot more sense for a lot of reasons. I felt really good before, and now I feel GREAT about moving forward with the campaign. I also have met a great photography/videography team that is local to me, within about 5 miles. This is exciting on so many levels, and I think it will help having all 3 of us nearby able to meet and look at content together.

.

One more note on things being local – I’m never a proponent of being all in on one supplier. Ever. Sole source of supply isn’t a good idea. That’s how monopolies happen, and it’s also how people get screwed when their supplier all of the sudden has an issue and can’t fulfill your order. In order to combat this, I have identified multiple sources of supply, and one of them just happens to be here in the US. To take it one step further, they are within 2 hours of my house! Nothing is set in stone yet, but things are looking really good for possibly being able to produce my bags here in the US. Nothing will make me happier about this whole situation than being able to provide a job opportunity for Americans here in my home country. As an entrepreneur, I feel grateful that I even have the drive and passion to WANT to be able to give back to my country in that way. A few more pieces need to unfold before I know whether it will be realistic or not, but that is what I am striving for.

.Onto another income stream that seems to interest so many people: Merch By Amazon. I currently am tiered up to the 500-shirt tier as of today. Until today, I was at the 100-shirt tier and making around $500/month for about 4 hours/week. With the new tier being at 500 shirts, I fully expect with the skills I’ve developed to date that I will be able to scale it linearly with the tier, giving me a potential monthly income of 5x$500 = $2500/month. This is the goal, so that is what I’m aiming for. If you aren’t working Merch into your income stream strategy, you might want to ask yourself why.

Cheers, here’s to 50 more!
