Episode 052: Interview with Farooq and Fasih Hussaini

What were you doing at 18, 19 and 20 years old? Were you hustling your way through college? Maybe working full time? Part time? Chances are, you weren’t running a globally-reaching fitness apparel company. I know I wasn’t.

.

Today’s interview is with the owners of Eximious Apparel, Farooq and Fasih Hussaini. These two guys are 18 and 20 years old. Farooq is heading into his freshman year in college, and Fasih is already a couple years into college. In their spare time, they decided that the best use of that free time is to build an apparel company. Not just a random t-shirt company or anything, but rather a brand with a mission.

.

Eximious is latin for greatness, or excellence. That is the underlying theme behind every piece of apparel they create. They are pushing for everyone who procures a piece of Eximious apparel to want to create the greatest, best, and most excellent version of themselves.

.

In this interview, Farooq and Fasih break down how they created the company, how they take orders today, some of the supplier bumps and bruises, and how they are moving forward with orders and future designs.

.

Two of the main takeaways that I think anyone can get out of this interview are:

  1. Taking action and executing are better than over-planning
  2. Being willing to fail and lose quickly will advance you forward faster than anything else

.

Go ahead and get in touch with Eximious. Check out how they are building their brand, and of course go to their site and pick up a sweet piece of apparel 🙂

Episode 051: New Schedule Announcement

Listeners of the Fit Successful Dad podcast, thank you so much for checking out my content and continuing to listen week after week. Your support means everything to me.

Going forward, sometime around the 4th of July 2017 I will be turning over from a 3-day-per-week schedule to a 2-day-per-week schedule. Episodes will be airing on Tuesdays and Thursdays. One day will be focused entirely on tactical, specific, and inspirational content. The other day will be an interview, just like the way I have been conducting thus far.

The main reason for this is that I feel like there is a bit more competition on the M/W/F schedule. When I say competition I’m really talking about reaching more peoples ears. The goal is still the same: reach as many people as possible, with or without the crazy family schedule that I have, and motivate them to reach their potential. I feel that by releasing my podcast on a Tuesday and Thursday I will increase the opportunity for engagement because I will not be competing as much with the top podcasts in our space. Will I reach more listeners? I don’t know. Everything needs tested, nothing is certain. Maybe in 3 or 6 months I find that the engagement is the same, or lower, or higher, and I make an adjustment then if necessary.

I also need to invest a little more time on a weekly basis to SOBAM Gear Co. as I continue to build it, so this allows me a little bit more time to do that while we approach the Kickstarter campaign launch in September 2017.

If either of these two reasons stood alone, I wouldn’t have changed the content schedule for the podcast. I absolutely love making this podcast, for both myself and you, the listener. The combination of those two reasons, however, made too much sense to ignore so here we are.

I hope you continue to listen because I really have some killer content coming up that I think you will love 🙂

Thank you for all of your support

Gordon

Episode 050: SOBAM Update, Merch Update & The Importance of Pivoting

Welcome to Episode 50 of the Fit Successful Dad Podcast!

.

It definitely still feels like just yesterday the podcast was just a concept. I was sitting with my sister around Thanksgiving 2016 talking about ideas, concepts, and names. Within a 24 hour window, I dialed in on all of those things and secured my domain name www.fitsuccessfuldad.com – what a rush. That was nearly 7 months ago, and now I have just published my 50th episode over 17 straight weeks with 100% consistency. I’ve also interviewed nearly 20 amazing entrepreneurs, and made dozens of new relationships. Some of which have been involved in helping me get my upcoming brand off the ground, SOBAM Gear Co.

.

Speaking of SOBAM Gear Co – I have made some changes to my strategy with the Kickstarter campaign. Mainly, I have pulled in a different campaign manager and content creator. This new relationship makes a lot more sense for a lot of reasons. I felt really good before, and now I feel GREAT about moving forward with the campaign. I also have met a great photography/videography team that is local to me, within about 5 miles. This is exciting on so many levels, and I think it will help having all 3 of us nearby able to meet and look at content together.

.

One more note on things being local – I’m never a proponent of being all in on one supplier. Ever. Sole source of supply isn’t a good idea. That’s how monopolies happen, and it’s also how people get screwed when their supplier all of the sudden has an issue and can’t fulfill your order. In order to combat this, I have identified multiple sources of supply, and one of them just happens to be here in the US. To take it one step further, they are within 2 hours of my house! Nothing is set in stone yet, but things are looking really good for possibly being able to produce my bags here in the US. Nothing will make me happier about this whole situation than being able to provide a job opportunity for Americans here in my home country. As an entrepreneur, I feel grateful that I even have the drive and passion to WANT to be able to give back to my country in that way. A few more pieces need to unfold before I know whether it will be realistic or not, but that is what I am striving for.

.Onto another income stream that seems to interest so many people: Merch By Amazon. I currently am tiered up to the 500-shirt tier as of today. Until today, I was at the 100-shirt tier and making around $500/month for about 4 hours/week. With the new tier being at 500 shirts, I fully expect with the skills I’ve developed to date that I will be able to scale it linearly with the tier, giving me a potential monthly income of 5x$500 = $2500/month. This is the goal, so that is what I’m aiming for. If you aren’t working Merch into your income stream strategy, you might want to ask yourself why.

.

If you have ever gotten any value out of this podcast whatsoever, please do me a favor and leave a review on iTunes. It would mean so much to me.

.

Cheers, here’s to 50 more!

Episode 049: Interview with Nitin Chhoda

Ever hear one of those stories about someone who goes from rags to riches and feel inspired? You know the ones… someone grows up with practically nothing, gets used to having nothing to lose, and then fights through whatever adversity is in their way in order to become some greater version of themselves.

.

Today’s guest is Nitin Chhoda, a man who did just that. He moved to the US from Bombay, India with no money and no real plan. He delivered pizza, slept in his car, and had some very tough times including not being able to afford winter clothes in the dead of wintertime. He’s certainly seen his fair share of struggles, but he didn’t let that get in his way. Today, Nitin owns several multi-million dollar businesses around his passion: health, wellness and fitness of the mind and body.

.

In this interview, you will hear how Nitin fostered the courage to keep pushing forward through his struggles, no matter how difficult things got. Working his way into being a physical therapist, Nitin eventually found unique and creative ways to connect with his audience beyond the basic clinical methods that others in his space were using. He was then able to monetize his audience in a way that left them with tremendous value.

.

Since that time, Nitin has gone on to build multiple businesses, which he discusses in the interview. Additionally, he is the author of a book called “Total Activation: The 5 Step Fitness Mantra”. In the podcast, he breaks down how this book is designed to interactively help people achieve high levels of wellness by combining techniques described in the book with supplements and skincare products.

.

All of what Nitin was able to accomplish to this point, he did while also starting and maintaining a family. He is a husband, a father of 1 with another child on the way. Some of the insights that Nitin provides in the interview about family, life, balance and entrepreneurship are GOLD!

Episode 048: How Do YOU Stay Inspired?

What keeps you inspired to move forward? Do you ever struggle to find motivation to start something new, or moreover, to keep grinding away as you slowly make progress on something? During this episode I break down some of the things that I use on a regular basis in my life to keep me motivated, inspired and determined to keep my crosshairs fixed on the target.

There are 5 things I constantly do week-in and week-out to stay focused. Sometimes these are things I do day-in and day-out. Just about anyone can deploy these or some minor variation of these to find a source to draw inspiration from. My 5 sources are:

  1. Family: My family is my life, period. My wife and son together are my rock and without out, I wouldn’t ever be able to stay as grounded as I do. Talking and interacting with them daily keeps me inspired and motivated to accomplish things in life and to stay ambitious.

  2. Brand Builders: As a brand-builder, I’m always interested in the strategies or tactics that other brand-builders (not necessarily fitness brands) deploy in order to propel their businesses to distant heights. I am able to find out details on these by digging away on social media for other brands and then I continue to keep digging to see what things were like before and after any major hiccups, roadblocks, or issues.

  3. Looking back on previous experiences, successes and failures. Everyone has something that occurred in their past that they can look back on and say “wow how the hell did I make it through that?” – drawing inspiration from this is one of my favorites.

  4. Alternatively from drawing inspiration from what lies ahead in the future is extremely powerful as well. Especially if you have put it all on the line and are holding yourself accountable as a result, you will be able to gain motivation simply from reminding yourself of that.

  5. Always stay anchored or grounded. I do this through fitness and exercising 4-5 days a week. Without this, I am not as sharp or thorough as I need to be sometimes. Your grounding technique may not be fitness or exercise, which is fine! Whatever it is, use that grounding technique as often as possible.

There are an infinite amount of ways to gain information and knowledge around what you are doing in order to stay inspired. What methods do you deploy? Whatever it is, make sure you do it often enough to NOT lose focus on a regular basis.

Take care,

Gordon

Episode 047: New Brand Announcement & Update

One of the things in life that I am most passionate about is the health of my body and the health of my mind. After living through all of the experiences I have lived through up until now, I have settled on this realization: health is one of the major pillars of being happy and reaching your true potential. To take this a step further, I firmly believe that strength of the mind is not enough by itself to fulfill this pillar. Likewise, strength of the body is not enough by itself to uphold the pillar either. We truly need a strong mind AND a strong body in order to really reach our full capabilities and leave our mark. By addressing both of these areas of one’s life, we can become invincible.

Having this thought process be at the forefront of my mind for several years now, I became hyper-focused on building that mind-body pillar such that I put energy into it every single day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. My journey through this part of my life involves working out extensively, no less than 4 days a week, usually 6, sometimes even 7. Every day I’m up around 5am, eating my egg whites and black coffee. Shortly thereafter I’m packing my gym bag with all of the normal stuff: change of clothes, shoes, towel, bottle of water, protein shake, shampoo, contact lenses, deodorant, etc. I go the gym and put in work, I shower, and I go on about my day. About every 6-12 months, that bag that I relied on so heavily day in and day out decides to quit. It rips, it tears, components break, zippers bind, and I have to throw it away. This has been going on for YEARS…

Which is why I created SOBAM Gear Co.

SOBAM stands for Strength of Body and Mind. Get it? We focus entirely on making the best and PRACTICAL gym bags in the world. What does this mean? It means that I have designed the bag to NOT succumb to all of the issues that I’ve experienced over the years with other gym bags that I paid good money for. I’ve spent around $1200.00 in gym bags over the last 10 years, and none of them are still standing. Some were $50 and some were over $100, with big brand names that you have heard of and see in major retailers every day. Well, I don’t want people to experience the same pain I’ve experienced with inferior equipment at inflated prices. SOBAM Gear Company is committed to producing the toughest, most practical gym bags in the world. Period.

Currently I am planning a Kickstarter campaign for September 2017 to raise the capital to launch the brand. I will be launching with 1 duffel bag model in 3 different colors, and have plans to roll out other amazing, unique products down the road such as: duffel bags of various sizes, backpacks, yoga bags, and some other fitness equipment and apparel.

My mission is to challenge people to think more and put more focus on strengthening both their mind AND body. Part of strengthening one of these is achieved by strengthening the other. I believe that by working out the body, one must go through a mental shift that builds discipline, motivation, work ethic, and subsequently results in a strengthened mind. The two play together to create the pillar of health.

Throughout the Summer of 2017 I will be building awareness and trying to gain traction so that when the campaign launches I can go right out of the gate with early backers and supporters in order to gain momentum. Without a successful Kickstarter, this brand will be much more difficult to build, and will take a LOT longer.

Stay tuned for pictures, videos, updates and of course, if YOU would like to help support SOBAM Gear Co. by becoming an early backer and letting me put you on the distribution list please e-mail me at gordon@fitsuccessfuldad.com – it would mean the world to me.

Take care & stay healthy,

Gordon

Episode 046: Interview with Neil Lassen of Merch Informer

A while back, I posted an episode on my top 5 recommended ways to generate income online. What was #1 on that list? Merch By Amazon. Why? It is easy, and as close to a passive income stream (they don’t really exist!) as I’ve been able to find.

.

Today’s interview is with the co-founder of a tool called Merch Informer. This tool, of which I have been a paid member for quite some time, is a powerful research tool specifically for Merch sellers. It quickly allows users to search for things like keywords, niches, listing optimization, trademarks, competition check, and more. If you are interested in selling on Merch, I recommend you at least check out the 3-day trial of Merch Informer to see what it’s all about.
.

In this interview, you will hear Neil break down some of the specific tactics he uses to create his 5-figure monthly royalties in Merch. He also explains the simplicity of the system, but how consistency is key. Neil really tells the audience exactly what to do to succeed in Merch: which BSR ratings to look for, when is a niche too overcrowded, which BSR ratings to stay away from, the types of designs that sell a lot even at his level, and more. There’s a ton of value to gain from this if you have any interest in selling on Merch at all!

.

In addition to the tactical things that Neil talks about, he does a great job of explaining the mistakes that beginners make, including the #1 mistake that ALL people who don’t succeed in Merch make. It’s a big one, and even though it’s simple, it’s SO true, and SO avoidable.

Episode 045: Fine Tuning The System

I’ve put a lot of thought into fine tuning myself in many ways over the years to basically optimize myself to live the best life possible. This whole conversation is a little “out there” but it really comes down to one main principle:

Make the tweaks necessary in your life to have more positivity, confidence, optimism and success.

.

Who doesn’t want to feel more positive, be more confident, and generally feel more optimistic about life? Find me the person who doesn’t want these things, and I will show you a liar.

.

In this episode, I go over 3 changes I think anyone can make in their life to improve all facets of it. These changes are:

  1. Dietary & Nutrition: Making dietary and nutrition changes are absolutely critical to improving the way you feel and act on a daily basis. Everyone has heard it before, but take a moment to really think about what you consume on a daily basis from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep. If you are over (or under) consuming the wrong things, you aren’t doing anybody any favors.

  2. Fitness & Exercise: This is a given, along with #1. Have you ever worked out and felt that great vibe that follows? Imagine living that way 24/7. That is possible, and it comes from a regular fitness and exercise routine. By constantly having the muscles growing and developing, and stressing them in a healthy way, you are building that foundation and strengthening it. The result of this is also often physical changes that create serious confidence.

  3. Finding your anchor! This one is big. Everyone has an anchor – an activity that grounds them in a way where afterwards they are dialed in, focused and all around engaged in LIFE. For some people this is working out (like me), for others it things like: cooking, playing an instrument, meditating, or something totally unique. Everyone has their own anchor, and it’s a very personal. The anchor is important, and should be part of your regular routine.

.

So why bother trying to fine tune your system anyway? Nothing will improve your RESULTS in life better than doing that. Anybody can get a job, start a business, have a child, or say they are going to do something. Fine tuning your system is a key component to allowing you actually successfully achieve all of those things. When you feel good, everything else becomes better and easier. This is sort of my “secret” to making sure I have the best shot possible at being successful in things, day in and day out.

.

Make the changes, see the results.

.

Episode 044: Remove Toxicity From Your Life

Chances are you have toxic people in your life.

.

What is a toxic person? Let’s look at the textbook definition of toxic: “poisonous” (e.g. the dumping of toxic waste).

.

There’s a lot of people that we interact with on a daily basis. The problem is that some of them are negative and toxic with their personalities and attitude. What happens when a person that is constantly negative and around us a lot is that they contaminate us and our energy and begins a long domino effect of the breakdown of our pillars of support. This continues to occur as long as we are in consistent proximity of negative people.

.

I’m a huge proponent of positivity, karma, gratitude, fulfillment, etc. I believe that all of this leads to the best form of us through personal and individual development in a way that cannot be replicated any other way. No one can put a price on feeling positive to the point where someone feels unstoppable and becomes inspired as a result. There is no drug that can produce this, it is purely achieved through mindset and lifestyle adjustments.

.

Remove the most negative, toxic, and demeaning people from your circle and you WILL see a massive positive change in all areas of your life.

.

Stay tuned for my announcement of my next brand which I’m going at very aggressively. There will be a Kickstarter campaign in September to raise the capital for a Q4 2017 launch.

.

Get out there and get after it!

Episode 043: Tax Lien Certificates with Ted Thomas

I met up with a guy named Ted Thomas a while back and I chatted with him and his staff for a while before we connected for an interview. During that time, I learned (or so I thought) a decent amount about tax liens. I thought I at least had enough information to have a small conversation about it. Boy was I wrong. There’s a whole world of income opportunities around tax lien certificates, reselling properties and all the things that go along with those, and Ted is an expert in all of it.

.

Throughout this interview you will hear Ted break down what exactly a tax lien is, why they are important, and how people can make substantial money on them. Additionally, Ted makes a point to reiterate that tax liens are one of the THE SAFEST investment opportunities due to the sole nature of how they were created and how they function. Due to this, it’s pretty difficult to actually lose money on tax liens.

.

Not only are tax liens safe, lucrative, and relatively easy to get started in…they’re also amazing income options for us busy parents with a lot going on. They definitely require some time to get fully educated and learn the system, but all in all it’s a relatively low time-investment if you are trying to make this is a supplementary income stream.

.

Do yourself a favor and check out Ted’s website, or get in touch with him directly and learn more about this interesting topic!
